El uso de plantas medicinales en las enfermedades de la glándula tiroides

Resumen
Millones de personas de todo el mundo padecen afecciones tiroideas, siendo las principales: hipotiroidismo, hipertiroidismo, nódulos tiroideos cancerosos o no cancerosos. El objetivo de este proyecto consistió en revisar acerca de la glándula tiroides, sus principales patologías y el empleo de plantas medicinales que puedan ser beneficiosas o perjudiciales en dependencia del tipo de afección que presente esta glándula. Se identificaron 22 plantas medicinales, como los más empleados para el tratamiento del hipotiroidismo y el hipertiroidismo respectivamente. Los compuestos químicos de mayor abundancia en las plantas recomendadas para el tratamiento del hipotiroidismo fueron las vitaminas y el yodo como elemento químico y en el caso del hipertiroidismo lo fueron los ácidos fenólicos y los carotenoides. No se encontró información científica que avale el empleo de estas plantas para las disfunciones de la glándula tiroides, por lo que su uso solo se sustenta en la medicina tradicional.
Millions of people around the world suffer from thyroid conditions, the main hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid nodules cancerous or non- cancerous. The objective of this project was to review about the thyroid gland, the main pathologies and the use of medicinal plants that can be beneficial or harmful depending on the type of condition to present this gland. Across the project 22 medicinal plants were identified as the most used for the treatment of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism respectively. The chemicals components most abundant in those recommended for the treatment of hypothyroidism plants were vitamins and iodine as chemical element and in the case of hyperthyroidism were the phenolic acids and carotenoids. No scientific data supporting the use of these plants for the dysfunction of the thyroid gland was found, so its use is only based on traditional medicine
