For the development of the present research project, liquid crystals were prepared for the incorporation of the Arnica montana. The system with and without active principle was characterized by polarized light microscopy where the formation of striations and malt crosses was observed, which indicates the presence of hexagonal and lamellar phase systems respectively. The addition of the Arnica showed a dark field, which suggests the formation of liquid crystal. The differential scanning calorimetry showed the interaction between the components of the formulation. The permeation and skin retention study was studied using pig ear skin and evaluated for 10 hours. The results showed that the liquid crystals increased the permeation of the active principle to the blood, which could act as transporters. With the results obtained, it is suggested that liquid crystals are promising systems in the cutaneous administration of Arnica montana.
