The red crab (U. occidentalis) is a commercial species in Ecuador, whose catches are estimated by the Public Institute for Aquaculture and Fisheries Research. However, the estimates depend on the sample size and therefore, the objective of this work is to determine the monthly catches according to different sample sizes. Information regarding the period 2011-2013 was used, collected by six fishing organizations in the Gulf of Guayaquil. By means of a random resampling without replacement, the sample size was reduced in each organization, to generate subsamples. The catches were estimated using the INP method and an alternative method. Balao showed the highest levels of catch while Mondragón had the lowest landings. The monthly catches analyzed presented similar standard errors, in sample sizes greater than 50%. The INP method presented values of individuals caught over or underestimated in comparison with the real catches, in proportions higher than the alternative method. It is suggested to analyze more alternatives to estimate the catches of red crab, considering a sample size greater than 50% of people who provide information in each fishing organization.
