COVID-19, generated by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is a highly contagious disease that affects each person in different ways, giving rise to being a risk factor in periodontal disease, it is highlighted that the link between these two diseases is the effect of generating a systemic inflammatory response generated by the microorganisms of the respiratory tract and the oral cavity upon contact, unleashing a disorder called "cytokine storm". The objective is to investigate the relationship between periodontal disease and COVID 19. Materials and methods: the research was bibliographic, analytical-systematic, historical-logical, qualitative and retrospective, in its search for a deductive method; from the keywords "Periodontal disease, COVID-19, periodontitis, gingivitis" which were used to obtain scientific articles on portals such as; Pudmed, SprigerLink, Scielo, Redalyc, Elservier, Google Academy and the virtual library of the University of Guayaquil. Results: Authors agree that periodontal disease is a risk factor for patients with COVID 19 since it generates a systemic inflammatory response by altering the patient's biochemical levels. Conclusions: Periodontal disease is an aggravating factor for patients who have acquired COVID-19, causing them to suffer complications when suffering from both diseases at the same time, highlighting that a cross or superimposed infection could develop that would lead to unleashing; assisted ventilation, pneumonia, bacteremia, septic shock, and even the death of the patient
