Cadmium (Cd) is an extremely dangerous heavy metal for living beings. In Ecuador, there are studies that show contamination in agricultural soils by this metal. The aim of this research was to evaluate the phytotoxicity of cadmium on growth, biomass and brix degrees in the sugarcane varieties Cenicaña (CC 85-92), Ragnar, ECU-01 and ECU-02 (EC-02). Ninety-six samples were exposed to different concentrations of CdCl2 (0.5, 1.2, 4 and 8 mg/kg) were tested and compared with a control (0 mg/kg) for 360 days. Among the growth parameters, stem height was the most affected by cadmium, because Ragnar and ECU-02 presented a growth stimulus at high concentrations, being the most tolerant, and Cenicaña and ECU-01 at low concentrations. The Cadmium had no effect on the biomass of roots, stems and leaves of all varieties. The Brix degrees of sugarcane juice extracted from each variety were determined using a refractometer, where Ragnar showed an increase in soluble solids proportional to the concentrations of Cd in the soil. On the other hand, cadmium concentrations were transferred in the following order soil>root>stem in Cenicaña, Ragnar and ECU-01 with values >0.1 mg/kg, where the Ragnar variety was the one that accumulated higher concentrations in the stem; on the other hand, the ECU-02 variety only presented detectable values in the root, resulting to be the most tolerant to cadmium by maintaining values below the maximum permissible limits, becoming the best option for cultivation in Ecuador to improve food safety.
