The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficacy of chemically pure calcium hydroxide with two different types of vehicles, which are chamomile extract and saline, to enhance the bacterial properties of calcium hydroxide and to incorporate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties of the chamomile extract. The research study was carried out in the integral clinic of Dentistry Faculty of the University of Guayaquil with the patients who underwent a root canal treatment. Twenty patients with or without pain were left medicated for 7 days, of which ten were medicated with calcium hydroxide with chamomile extract and the other ten with calcium hydroxide and saline so as to check the analgesic, anti-inflammatory effects and the absence of bacteria in the root canal. The results obtained revealed that there was an analgesic, anti-inflammatory effect and total elimination of bacteria in the root canal after medication. In conclusion, chamomile extract as a vehicle of calcium hydroxide is more effective than saline because it enhances its antimicrobial effect with an analgesic, anti-inflammatory effect. Therefore, the use of chamomile extract or saline as an aqueous vehicle for calcium hydroxide is recommended, as it enhances its antimicrobial properties and offers an analgesic, anti-inflammatory effect to the patient from one appointment to another which helps us to give a better patient care.
