Over time, fluoride, from being an element harmful to health, became one of the main culprits and one of the most effective methods in reducing dental caries in industrialized countries. That is why this research work is oriented and aims to determine the benefits and consequences of the use of topical fluoride in the dental health of pediatric patients, since the little information that is available about its advantages leads to the risk of presence of dental caries in children. The methodology of the research is bibliographical with a qualitative, exploratory, documentary, analytical, synthetic and historical approach. The results addressed show that topical fluoride treatment has been one of the main strategies to prevent carious processes in children. There are different presentations of fluoride for oral use, each presentation has its concentration, application, dose, frequency of use and indications. Fluoride for topical use prevails over fluoride for systemic use, since there is a direct application on the dental surface. Fluoridated toothpastes, mouthwashes, gels and varnishes are the most widely used today due to their ease. Fluoride toothpastes and rinses are one of the main forms of treatment as they can be self-applied. In conclusion, the mechanism of action of fluoride prevents caries, since topical fluoride has a greater predominance, since it stimulates the remineralization of incipient lesions and therefore the reduction of the demineralization of healthy dental enamel, with correct use.
