Resumen
La caries dental en la actualidad sigue siendo una enfermedad que
frecuentemente es observada en niños, siendo la causante de
mutilaciones dentarias y sus secuelas. Se ha observado en los últimos
años una reducción en la prevalencia y severidad de la misma, sin
embargo, las lesiones de caries en fosas y fisuras tanto en dientes
temporales como en permanentes son las más frecuentes. La caries
dental, es una de las enfermedades silenciosas de mayor impacto en las
ciudades industrializadas, afectando en un 60 a 90% de niños en edad
escolar y a gran parte de la población adulta. El diagnóstico de las caries
de fosas, surcos y fisuras, es uno de los grandes problemas con que debe
enfrentarse el odontólogo general o el odontopediatra. La morfología
abigarrada, irregular e impredecible de estos accidentes anatómicos, hace
que favorezca la aparición de caries y, que su diagnóstico sea difícil y
complejo y, a veces imposible con los métodos clásicos de exploración y
diagnóstico. Actualmente, las estrategias preventivas se inclinan en que la
actuación del odontólogo debe basarse en aplicar medios y métodos para
aumentar la resistencia del diente, administración de flúor y la colocación
de selladores de fisuras, entre otros.

Currently , preventive strategies are inclined in the performance dentist should be based on means and methods to apply increase the resistance of teeth , fluoride administration and placement fissure sealant , and others.
