The objective of this project was to verify the efficacy of chlorhexidine gluconate 2% in reducing pathogens in cavity preparations. Chlorhexidine gluconate 2% was used in three different teeth. These tests consisted of removing carious tissue, apply 2% chlorhexidine for 15 seconds before applying the adhesive system. The first sample was performed on the patient 17 years old, female, decay class presented in Part I # 46; culture analysis was conducted in sheep blood agar using the technique of exhaustion, at 24 hours of incubation the presence of streptococcus parasanguinus was observed, which is a bacterium that is related to cariogenic biofilms; while the analysis of the sample culture chlorhexidine was observed at 48 hours of incubation there was no bacterial growth. The second and the third sample was performed in 57 years old male with periodontal problems, caries had both class IV part # 21 and part # 22; culture analysis was conducted in sheep blood agar using depletion technique, after 24 hours of incubation the two samples collected in the presence of Streptococcus gordonii was observed, which is a bacterium that is related to the problem Periodontal; while the analysis of the sample culture Chlorhexidine was observed at 48 hours of incubation there was no bacterial growth. Thus we found that the Chlorhexidine is 95% effective as antimicrobial agent.
