Introduction: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a predominant pathology in men over 40 years of age, defined by uncontrolled proliferation and alterations suffered by the cells of the gland that comprise it. The disease is characterized by having obstructive or irritative qualities, which are included within the group of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Based on the IPSS, we not only assess the patient's clinical grade, but also their adherence to treatment, be it pharmacological or surgical. Objective: To describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of urinary retention in benign prostatic hyperplasia. Methodology: This research is observational, non-experimental, analytical, retrospective, and cross-sectional, with a descriptive level. Results: The most affected age group according to the sample is the seventh decade of life with 39.15%, which mostly manifested obstructive symptoms, 43.20% being confirmed BPH, of which 72.76% are managed on an outpatient basis. Conclusions: Through this study, taking the General Hospital of Guayaquil IESS Los Ceibos as the main source, the main age group with BPH, the symptoms mostly presented and the association between urinary retention and the degree of magnitude in which it occurs were determined. each patient with BPH.
