Early childhood caries is defined as the presence of one or more cavitated or non-cavitated, lost or filled teeth in the deciduous dentition in children under 71 months of age, being a chronic disease of rapid progression that has as consequences in the children feeding problems, deterioration in quality of life, potential to increase their risk of cavities in permanent teeth, etc. The objective of the present investigation was to determine the factors that influence the development of this pathology. A qualitative, descriptive, cross-sectional and non-experimental bibliographic research was carried out. A search was carried out in the different search engines such as PubMed, Scielo, Google Scholar, University Repositories, etc. It was concluded that early childhood caries is a disease that develops on smooth dental surfaces, which is caused by factors such as bad eating habits, bacterial colonization, poor removal of bacterial plaque, among others. This condition shows a characteristic pattern related to the sequence of dental eruption, being the most effective treatment the promotion and prevention of oral health.
