| dc.description.abstract | Los terceros molares son los últimos dientes en erupcionar (salir y ocupar su posición en la boca). Son cuatro, dos en el hueso maxilar superior una del lado derecho y otra del lado izquierdo y dos en la mandíbula, una derecha y otra izquierda. Generalmente aparecen entre las edades de 18 y 24 años, aunque hay una amplia variación en las fechas de erupción. Uno o más terceros molares están ausentes en aproximadamente el 25% de los adultos pero aún puede estar presente en las personas mayores, de lo contrario el paciente es desdentado. Estas piezas fueron útiles en el pasado pues aportaban potencia masticatoria cuando aun no preparábamos los alimentos y estos estaban potencialmente más duros. Con el paso del tiempo nuestros maxilares (los huesos que forman la mandíbula) han ido disminuyendo de tamaño, pero conservamos el mismo número de dientes, es decir 32. La evolución de los huesos no ha ido pareja con la evolución de los dientes. No todo el mundo desarrolla estas piezas. En algunas poblaciones, son muy raros, mientras que en otros, son más comunes. Estos dientes son también no necesariamente problemáticos. En algunas regiones del mundo, muchas personas desarrollan los terceros molares y no experimentan problemas de salud, manteniendo los dientes. En otros casos, un tercer molar puede llegar a ser un problema. Hay varias maneras en que estos dientes pueden causar problemas. El más común es la retención, la mandíbula a veces no tiene espacio para el diente, lo que obligó a crecer en un ángulo incómodo o erupción incompleta. Esto puede causar dolor en la mandíbula , y puede poner a las personas en riesgo de infecciones. Four , two in the upper jaw bone one from the right and one on the left and two on the jaw, a right and a left .
